‌John,

The budget agreement reached by President Biden and Speaker McCarthy, now passed by both chambers, is the only way forward to avoid a disastrous default in a week that would spark a recession, destroy Delawareans’ retirement accounts, and cost our state countless jobs. I am glad that both sides were able to come together and do what's right for our country in the end.

I have faith in President Biden and his negotiating team; ultimately, this is the best deal that could be reached, given the damaging demands of House Republicans. It protects critical accomplishments of the Biden Presidency and key programs on which Delawareans — and people all over the nation — rely.

However, I want to emphasize that this situation should not be the precedent for our country's future. The debt ceiling should have never been a bargaining chip, and the House Republican majority's initial refusal to raise it was reckless and put our country's economy and families in serious danger.

We must stop this abuse of the debt ceiling from ever happening again. This year, I reintroduced the Protect our CREDIT Act , a bill that will change how the debt ceiling is raised, making it easier to prevent a default and stop a future hostage situation in our economy. By passing this bill, we can ensure we can continue keeping our promises while protecting the interests of the people we serve.

If you're with me and support legislation to prevent another debt ceiling crisis, add your name to this petition >> [link removed]
