Yesterday, the U.S. House passed an agreement to raise the debt limit. The deal keeps spending on vital programs, like Meals on Wheels, flat for the next two years—a cut in inflation-adjusted terms.

But that’s not enough for Kevin McCarthy and MAGA Republicans. McCarthy went on FOX News to announce that “I’m going to make some people uncomfortable. This isn’t the end…I’m going to announce a commission. We have to look at the entire budget. The President walled off all the others. The majority driver of the budget is mandatory spending. It’s Medicare, Social Security…”¹

In other words, McCarthy is furious that President Biden refused to cut Social Security and Medicare as part of the debt limit bill. Now, McCarthy is plotting to create a closed-door commission to reach into our pockets and steal our earned benefits.
