JOHN,
Last night, I held a community conversation event in my district where a number of residents expressed concern over the education debt crisis in our country and the impacts on their lives. As we were holding this event, the Senate, with no public input, passed a measure that would reverse the Biden education debt relief program.
Fortunately, President Biden will veto this attack on the millions of people trapped under crushing education debt. But we know that even if the president’s education debt relief plan finally goes through, this one-time cancellation of federal student loans is not enough. We need to cancel ALL education debt.
President Biden took action on the education debt crisis because of the continuous pressure from our progressive movement. The plan announced would provide $10,000 in relief for federal education debt for anyone who made less than $125,000 in 2020 or 2021—and to cancel an additional $10,000 for anyone who received Federal Pell Grants.
We can't stop fighting for debt relief. The extremist right-wing Supreme Court has held up the president’s student debt relief plan, and yesterday some Democrats in the Senate joined Republicans in overturning Biden’s plan.
Add your name now to demonstrate your support for President Biden’s student debt relief plan as he vetoes terrible student loan legislation. Let’s also use this moment to call for the cancellation of all education debt.
Loans with high interest rates keep people mired in debt their whole lives, simply for seeking higher education.
It is important to note that education debt is a racial and social justice issue: Student loans widen the racial wealth gap and disproportionately harm Black women.
Right now, 43 million Americans are saddled with education debt, which further entrenches systemic racism and the cycle of poverty. Canceling student debt would relieve a heavy burden from struggling families and get us closer to a world where we can all not only survive, but thrive.
Please sign now to support President Biden’s veto and call to go even further by abolishing education debt permanently.
In solidarity,
Rashida
