Hi John xxxxxx,
The Buffalo Common Council is made up of nine council members representing the nearly 270,000 people who reside in Buffalo. But here’s the problem… ZERO out of those nine council members are women.
Yes, you read that right. There is not even one woman representing the women of Buffalo in the room where the city’s most important decisions are being made – and it shows. In the 14207 zip code, 52% of children live below the poverty line. Many families, especially those with women as the head of household, struggle with low-income wages, unsafe housing, and unaffordable childcare.
Our endorsed candidate, Eve Shippens, hopes to change that.
We are proud to endorse Eve Shippens. She is a mother, educator, and community leader. As a councilwoman, her priorities are improving Buffalo's quality of life with increased access to city services, neighborhood stabilization, and anti-poverty initiatives. And her election is on June 27, which is less than a month away! Can you pitch in $20.23 so we can support Eve before this critical election? |

Currently, Eve’s district is represented by Joe Golombek Jr., the anti-choice incumbent who has been holding this very seat on the council for 6 terms and 24 years. Since he first took office in 1999, he has become entrenched in his base of conservatives, Republicans, and right-leaning Democrats. But times have changed. The district has become more diverse and more ready for new leadership.
Eve currently serves as the co-chair of the Buffalo Parent Teacher Organization, delegate for New York State United Teachers, and on the Executive Committee of the Buffalo Teacher Federation. As a parent, teacher, and resident of her district, Eve has seen and felt the impact of many of the issues her neighbors face, including poverty, domestic violence, supporting loved ones through addiction and mental health struggles, and housing instability. For nearly a decade, she has worked at a local and state level for better public education, public transit, workers’ rights, housing stability, racial and social justice, and mutual aid.
Here’s the thing: In Buffalo’s North District,
women outnumber male voters. Eve has a real opportunity to tap into that voting bloc and defeat her opponent. It’s been too long since there was a woman on the Common Council – and we can’t stomach the thought of yet another room of all-male elected representatives making decisions about WOMEN’S lives and WOMEN’S bodies.
It’s time to shatter this glass ceiling by replacing an anti-choice incumbent with a WOMAN dedicated to improving Buffalo's quality of life. Her primary is less than a month away, and we have no time to waste. Can you rush in $20.23 right now so we can send Eve the support she needs?
In solidarity,
Colleen Davis
