John, Representative George Santos has finally been indicted by the Justice Department, and now faces 13 counts – including embezzling donor money from his campaign, money laundering, and lying to the House of Representatives.

I’m sure you’ve heard about Santos by now, but in case you need a reminder, George Santos is the New York GOP Congressman who notoriously lied about nearly everything on his resume, and attempted to win over his voters by capitalizing on tragedies like the Holocaust, the PULSE nightclub shooting, and 9/11. [1]

John, I’m glad the Justice Department is finally taking action after Santos misled and lied to his constituents. But the question still remains – how did George Santos get away with lying for so long in the first place?

Santos’s web of deception and lies points out a gaping hole in our political process – a lack of transparency and accountability.

This hole has only gotten worse since Citizens United has allowed corporations to shell out billions in often undisclosed money to influence our elections. Now, it's up to people-powered organizations like Common Cause to fill in the gaps.

Common Cause has been fighting for transparency and accountability in our government for over 50 years now. And we have no plans of stopping anytime soon.
