DC voted to raise the wage: now we must fight the effort to weaken it. In November 2022, DC voters overwhelmingly supported a ballot measure to raise the wages of tipped workers.
A new DC Council bill would significantly change the law’s implementation in ways that will hurt workers and put the initiative at risk of being completely overturned. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie’s “Workers and Restaurants Are Priorities Act of 2023” would delay pay increases, allow restaurants to charge deceitful fees easily confused as tips, and make it easier for the restaurant industry to fight the law in the future. The bill will have its first hearing on Thursday, June 8.
