Friend – It's been 54 years since the June 28 Stonewall uprising when LGBTQ people, led by transgender women of color, protested police brutality and fought for simple survival. That violent event has evolved into Pride, a colorful, month-long-plus celebration of LGBTQ culture and history. This year, after a difficult Iowa legislative session where LGBTQ rights were relentlessly attacked, it's especially important to attend a local Pride event to be in community, show solidarity, and celebrate the right of everyone to be exactly who they truly are. Check the many Pride events all across the state. One of Iowa's biggest Pride events is held by Capital City Pride. PrideFest Weekend kicks off Friday, June 9, and continues through Sunday, June 10, in Des Moines. We hope to see you at one of these events! Happy Pride, ACLU of Iowa Staff |
