Dear Reader,

Reporters at The Hechinger Report publish journalism that disrupts the status quo. Last year, we spent months digging into problematic discipline policies and practices that are in place, nationwide. We submitted hundreds of public records requests, analyzed never-before released data and talked to dozens of parents and students about their experiences with school discipline.
As we close out this spring, we need to raise $10,000 to continue this critical work and support our investigations team.

Here are just a few examples of impact that donations helped make happen:
* A story about schools punishing young students by withholding recess was cited by a California state senator who proposed a law that would both require daily recess for K-8 students and repeal the state code that allowed for recess to be withheld for disciplinary reasons. The California bill is now moving through the state senate.
* Our investigation into how some schools in Arizona suspend students for poor attendance prompted one lawmaker to immediately draft legislation that would prohibit educators from using this punishment. The bill received bipartisan support before stalling this session; it is expected to be reintroduced next year.
* Another investigation into thousands long-term suspensions that students received in New York State compelled the Albany Times Union to write an editorial urging lawmakers to finally consider a proposed bill that would reform suspensions statewide. In May, the bill received its first hearing.
