We’re still only beginning to understand the underwater world. But as science – and programs like the mind-boggling Blue Planet II – reveal more of its secrets, it’s becoming ever clearer that our marine environment is under serious threat.
In fact the UN’s oceans chief has declared ocean plastic to be a planetary crisis [1].
In the UK there are some signs of progress. The government is consulting on a plastic bottle deposit scheme and bans for straws and cotton buds, following pressure from campaigners. It's also been talking about eliminating 'avoidable' plastic waste like wet wipes.
But much more urgent action is needed across the UK if we’re serious about tacking the plastic crisis.
