It’s June – which means summer is around the corner and the Supreme Court is once more poised to uproot our established rights and principles. Last year, the ultra-conservative majority threw out 50 years of precedent with its disastrous Dobbs opinion, overturning Roe v. Wade and jeopardizing thousands of people’s lives .

This year, AFJ is monitoring several cases [[link removed]] impacting access to education, workers’ rights, LGBTQ+ rights, indigenous rights, and environmental protections. Already, the Supreme Court has dealt a dangerous blow [[link removed]] to clean water protections across the country with last week’s Sackett v. EPA [[link removed]] . That decision will allow fossil fuel companies and other polluters to do more damage to our environment. Just yesterday [[link removed]], it eroded labor union power in its Glacier Northwest decision by imposing tort liability on striking workers.

Rest assured, AFJ will keep you up to date on Supreme Court decisions and what they mean for our democracy all month long.

The Good News
In May, ProPublica exposed detailed evidence [[link removed]] of Justice Clarence Thomas’s corruption, including his acceptance of gifts, luxury trips, and private school tuition for his grandnephew from Republican billionaire Harlan Crow and failure to report these perks, among other flagrant ethical disclosure violations. Justice Thomas’s continued presence on the Court threatens our rule of law and our democracy.

We must restore justice— that's why AFJ, and a growing coalition of partners, is calling on Justice Thomas to resign. T his week, we launched a new camp a ign [[link removed]] calling for Thomas’s resign ation and for more voices to join our movement . Senator Markey and Senator Blumenthal have already joined the call for resignation. With their leadership, we urge more senators to see what Americans can see plainly: We cannot trust a court that refuses to hold itself accountable.
