Barb Warwick: E-scooters are fun, but they aren’t a meaningful transit solution |
"[...] When Katelyn Chertik heard Spin present its safety statistics at the post-agenda, she was understandably upset. On Feb. 20 of this year, her brother, Lawrence “Larry” John Chertik III, 35, hit a pothole on a Spin e-scooter, fell into the handlebars, ruptured his spleen and died within a matter of hours.
I spoke with Katelyn before writing this, and she talked about how much she worries when she sees people flying down busy streets on scooters, sometimes more than one person at a time, sometimes with kids — never with helmets. And because Spin relies only on user self-reporting to determine the scooters’ safety, we can’t know what other injuries or fatalities have fallen through the cracks.
We should also look at how other cities are benefiting from shared e-scooters. Austin reports roughly $1 million in revenue [which funds City programs]; Chicago, nearly $4.4 million. Here in Pittsburgh, Spin got its permit to operate for just $150.
So why is Spin getting so much while Pittsburgh gets back so little? [...]" |

The City needs to focus its attention on removing sidewalk restrictions, not creating more. The City's MovePGH pilot program centers tech products instead of the people with the greatest mobility needs (disabled people, elderly people, parents pushing strollers and groceries).
Rather than cheerleading for tech companies and the MovePGH program, the City should invest in mobility solutions that benefit everyone - sidewalks, bus stops, crosswalks, lighting and benches. Give your feedback on the final evaluation survey for the scooter program and MovePGH pilot before 5pm on Friday, 6/2. |

As the brass band sings, join us to celebrate the burial of the Mon Oakland Connector and uplift a new vision of community-centered process to take its place - one that uplifts the power of Pittsburghers over products and corporate profits. Join residents of Four Mile Run, Hazelwood and Panther Hollow, along with Junction Coalition, Pittsburghers for Public Transit, P.O.O.R.L.A.W., GH-CARED, and Eagleburger Band, for a New Orleans-style brass band funeral parade followed by a good-’ol community potluck picnic.
