Talking Points Memo:
Texas GOP Moves To Commandeer Elections In Houston
“Texas state lawmakers crept closer late Monday night to approving a series of bills aimed at stripping one of the country’s largest cities of the authority to run its own elections.”

Team, this latest power grab from the Texas GOP is truly unprecedented.
Republicans know they can’t win elections by running on their extreme agenda – voters made that perfectly clear last November when they sent shockwaves across the country by turning out in full force to defeat election-denying and anti-choice candidates.
But now, Texas Republicans are determined to silence voters’ voices by taking full control over elections in Houston, the state’s largest and most Democratic city. The Texas legislature has passed legislation that will give the Republican secretary of state veto power over how elections are run in Houston and could even allow state officials to overturn legitimate election results.
This kind of assault on our elections has no place in our democracy, team. Will you pitch in to help power the NDRC’s work to protect voting rights and more across the country?

Attorney General Eric Holder hit the nail on the head when he said, “Republicans use their MINORITY power to undermine democracy because too many of them fear that they can’t win in a fair electoral system. They’re afraid of the voters.”
And it’s not just Republicans in Texas. From Alabama, to Ohio, to Florida, to Montana, to North Carolina, Republicans across the nation are using anti-democratic tactics to hold onto unearned power and enforce their unpopular agenda.
Their actions remind us why we must double down in the fight for fair representation: Because if we don’t step up, they will upend democracy as we know it.
Team, your donation will help the NDRC build a grassroots army to combat GOP power grabs and fight for fairness in every corner of the country. Will you pitch in now?
