Tracey, Deborah, and Lisa geese at sanctuary

JUNE 2023

Three Feathered Friends
Join Our Flock

Last fall, we welcomed three bonded geese Deborah, Tracey, and Lisa, to our New York sanctuary. The Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) originally confiscated the Buff geese trio from a homeowner who kept them cruelly confined and used them for egg production.

Thanks to their much-needed intervention and Humane Long Island, the geese were rehabilitated and brought to sanctuary. Here, Deborah, Tracey, and Lisa continue to be inseparable but now receive the love and individualized care all living beings deserve.

Ditch Dairy:
A Plant-Based Milk Guide

Have you heard dairy is on the decline? Don’t worry; your bones and teeth will be fine. While June is “Dairy Month,” we want to call attention to the real life of dairy cows and celebrate compassionate plant-based alternatives — and we’re in luck! Stores are more stocked than ever with vegan options, and this guide will help you decide which one’s for you.

Celebrating Family Day
at Sanctuary

In May, we were honored to host our first-ever Family Day at our California sanctuary. It was a memorable afternoon spent with over 100 kindhearted friends who gathered to recognize farmed animals' loving bonds! Attendees enjoyed a vegan high tea, time with rescued residents, a storytime with author-illustrator Ruby Roth, and more.

On May 11, the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 12 — a decision that bans gestation crates, veal crates, and other inhumane industry practices. Farm Sanctuary was actively involved in this major win for farmed animals. Read the industry’s reaction and hear from Farm Sanctuary President Gene Baur in this Newsweek article.

Sanctuary Tours: See Compassion In Action

Plan a trip to our New York or California sanctuary to experience a transformative tour. Sanctuary is a rare place for cows, pigs, sheep, and other farmed species to exist free from exploitation. Meet our inspiring rescued residents — survivors of animal agriculture — and further your understanding of our modern food system.

Responsible Animal Guardianship

We aim to provide care for the hundreds of rescued farmed animals who call our sanctuaries home so that they can truly thrive. While providing this care is not easy, it is well worth it. We want to share our experience during Responsible Animal Guardianship month so that you, too, can be informed and ready if and when you choose to become a responsible animal guardian.

The Farm Bill Needs
Big Changes

In this op-ed in The Hill, Farm Sanctuary Senior Manager of U.S. Government Affairs Alex Bookis and Center for Biological Diversity's Mark Rifkin share why this year's Farm Bill needs an overhaul. Currently, this bill perpetuates immense harm by putting the profits of Big Ag over people, farmed animals, and the planet. Find out how we can shift the farm bill to actually build the good.
