The family who became gazillionaires through their company’s aggressive marketing of OxyContin just got immunity from lawsuits brought by victims of our nation’s opioid epidemic.
An appeals court has ruled that the Sackler family — the former owners of Purdue Pharma — can buy themselves immunity from all current and future civil litigation for $6 billion. (That may sound like a lot, but the Sacklers would be left with many billions more to spare.)
But ...
The Sacklers are NOT immune from criminal liability.
The U.S. Department of Justice can and must investigate and prosecute to the full extent of the law any member of the Sackler family who committed any crimes in the drive for opioid riches.
Tell the DOJ:
The Sackler family may have exploited bankruptcy to dodge lawsuits from victims of the opioid crisis. But they can, and must, be held criminally accountable if they broke any laws in their insatiable pursuit of profits.
