School Nurses Enhance the Health and Well-Being of Rural Children

Rural school nurses are on the front lines of providing health care for children and families in rural Colorado, but there is little research from their perspective. Preventing Opioid Overdose In Pre-Teen and Adolescent Students

Drug overdose deaths in pre-teen and adolescent students have risen over the past several years. School nurses are well-positioned to recognize students at risk for illicit drug use and to educate students, staff, families, and the community. The NASN School Nurse article, Deaths From Drug Overdoses What School Nurses Need to Know, discusses risk factors for opioid misuse and provides recommendations for interventions school nurses can use to help prevent opioid overdose and death in pre-teens and adolescence.

Coordinated Support System for Students with Epilepsy (CSSSE)

School nurses play a critical role in ensuring that students with epilepsy are safe in school by providing chronic disease management, educating the school community on seizure safety, and bridging the gap between the school, students, and underutilized community-based services. NASN’s CSSSE program will increase the capacity of school nurses to serve as the linchpin that binds the work together and coordinates efforts to support the needs of students with epilepsy during school and as they transition out of high school. • In NASN's NCPD program Incorporating Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) into School Health Services to Promote Health Equity, learn how positive behavior intervention and supports, response to intervention, and MTSS are related and how the WSCC model and NASN’s Framework for 21st Century School Nursing™ align with the MTSS framework to support the physical, mental, and social needs of all students.

• The Epilepsy Foundation’s Seizure Training for School Nurses: Caring for Students program is designed to provide the school nurse with information, strategies, and resources to better manage the student with seizures.

The SAGE Perspectives blog, Cancer Prevention Begins in Middle School, shares crucial information on the sexually transmitted infection so common that the average American will contract it at some point and likely never know they were infected: the human papillomavirus (HPV). It also touches on the lack of screening procedures, an excellent primary prevention method, and the critical role school nurses play. Read the blog.

Climate change-related impacts on children can have lifelong consequences. The Climate Change and Children’s Health and Well-Being in the United States Report quantifies projected health effects associated with extreme heat, air quality, changing seasons, flooding, and infectious diseases. The report also, where possible, considers the extent to which these risks disproportionately fall on children from overburdened populations. 

• To protect and promote the health of all children, robust environmental health protections must be in place, and the inequities that lead to environmental injustice must be eliminated. See NASN's Position Statement on Environmental Health.

Park and recreation agencies everywhere share ways families can get active, and members of the healthcare and public health communities are encouraged to participate, as well. The National Recreation and Park Association's Family Health & Fitness Day logo and outreach toolkit are available to share.
