President's Message

We want to welcome Terri Hinkley, EdD, MBA, BScN, RN, CAE, who has been named Executive Director of NASN, effective August 7, 2023. She will succeed Donna Mazyck, MS, RN, NCSN, CAE, FNASN, who retired April 28, 2023.

An experienced RN with deep connections across the nursing spectrum, Hinkley currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board, is President of the American Board of Nursing Specialties, and sits on the Board of Directors for the Institute for Credentialing Excellence. Previously she was the Workforce Innovation Officer at the Association of Clinical Research Professionals and is an adjunct professor at George Washington University. In 2020, Terri advocated for the medical-surgical nursing anti-racism pledge and an intentional DEI commitment. Terri’s doctorate focused on organizational learning, specifically, how to prepare the workforce for the future.

Hinkley brings a wealth of leadership experience and has a strategic, forward-thinking, and data-driven approach to organizational decision-making. Her knowledge of association management, her wide-ranging experience, and passion for nursing and school health will be a benefit to the organization.

School Nurses Enhance the Health and Well-Being of Rural Children

Rural school nurses are on the front lines of providing health care for children and families in rural Colorado, but there is little research from their perspective. In the JOSN June Podcast, Martha Dewey Bergren, JOSN editor, interviews author Alice Burch to discuss the article "Rural School Nurses Face Challenges in Colorado: A Qualitative Study." Listen here.

Preventing Opioid Overdose In Pre-Teen and Adolescent Students

Drug overdose deaths in pre-teen and adolescent students have risen over the past several years. School nurses are well-positioned to recognize students at risk for illicit drug use and to educate students, staff, families, and the community. The NASN School Nurse article, Deaths From Drug Overdoses What School Nurses Need to Know, discusses risk factors for opioid misuse and provides recommendations for interventions school nurses can use to help prevent opioid overdose and death in pre-teens and adolescence.

Managing Chronic Health Conditions

Coordinated Support System for Students with Epilepsy (CSSSE)

School nurses play a critical role in ensuring that students with epilepsy are safe in school by providing chronic disease management, educating the school community on seizure safety, and bridging the gap between the school, students, and underutilized community-based services. NASN’s CSSSE program will increase the capacity of school nurses to serve as the linchpin that binds the work together and coordinates efforts to support the needs of students with epilepsy during school and as they transition out of high school. Learn more about the CSSSE program.

Improving School Community & Student Health

The Importance of HPV Screening, Education and Vaccination

The SAGE Perspectives blog, Cancer Prevention Begins in Middle School, shares crucial information on the sexually transmitted infection so common that the average American will contract it at some point and likely never know they were infected: the human papillomavirus (HPV). It also touches on the lack of screening procedures, an excellent primary prevention method, and the critical role school nurses play. Read the blog.

Climate Change and Children’s Health and Well-Being

Climate change-related impacts on children can have lifelong consequences. The Climate Change and Children’s Health and Well-Being in the United States Report quantifies projected health effects associated with extreme heat, air quality, changing seasons, flooding, and infectious diseases. The report also, where possible, considers the extent to which these risks disproportionately fall on children from overburdened populations.
