This landmark legislation is set to become law today, June 1, bringing a significant positive change to our democracy. It’s the single biggest act of enfranchisement since the voting age was changed to eighteen in 1971.

People who have already served their time, sometimes decades ago, have sometimes felt no stake in our elections, no investment in our democracy, and no way to be heard. They will now have that voice. They will have that power. They will reclaim a sense of ownership for themselves.

This new law is good for all of us. It’s not simply a kind gesture. Studies show that ex-offenders with a sense of ownership in our democracy are less likely to re-offend. That makes us all safer.

But our work doesn't end just because the law has taken effect. We need to work hard on successful implementation and integration of this new freedom to vote. That means informing and engaging newly enfranchised people - and providing them with the information they need to make their voices fully heard. It’s a big task.
