May Recap

We're in the homestretch of the NYS legislative session with less than a week left. Below are updates on what's been happening in Albany throughout the month of May. Be sure to make your voice heard and take action on a number of the issues below.

Stop Assisted-Suicide in NY

Proponents of doctor-assisted suicide are still trying to legalize this deadly practice in New York. Lawmakers need to hear from their constituents if we hope to avoid yet another assault on human life here. Assisted suicide is dangerous for patients, caregivers, and vulnerable populations such as the elderly and people with disabilities. Suicide is not medical care. Please tell your State Senate and Assembly representatives that you oppose this dangerous and deadly practice. Contact your state legislators now!

Clean Slate Act

Lawmakers are currently negotiating technical provisions of the Clean Slate Act, which would seal most felony and misdemeanor convictions after a period of time. While the bill is well intentioned and the Catholic Conference is supportive of second chances for previous offenders, it is gravely flawed in that it would prohibit Catholic schools and ministries from accessing critical information in background checks for potential employees and volunteers who work with children, while public schools would have access to the conviction histories. This disparity must be addressed for the protection of children. See our memo of CONCERN here.

Hospice and Palliative Care Access & Quality

Legislators have proposed a bill that would establish the office of hospice and palliative care access and quality. Hospice and palliative care are critically important for the preservation of the dignity of life at its end stages. Sadly, this important legislation was vetoed by the governor last year. We urge the legislature to re-pass it and the Governor to sign it. See our memo of SUPPORT here
