John,

UK businesses are facing the most challenging economic conditions in peacetime.

The British economy, and particularly small businesses, are under immense pressure. Huge global factors like the Ukraine war continue to affect prices across the world, but UK businesses are also dealing with the effects of new trading arrangements which have added costs and red tape while reducing opportunities and investment.

For too many businesses it has meant shutting up shop for good.

That’s why the cross-party UK Trade and Business Commission of MPs and business leaders has published a landmark new report <[link removed]> with a clear blueprint for how we can begin to repair the damage.

This report comes as political parties are writing manifestos and the opportunity right now for influencing the future policy of the next government is huge. Share the report with your MP - it doesn't matter which party they belong to, if they claim to care about the future of our country they should care about this report.

And we want ALL the parties to take note and adopt these recommendations.

This is the most comprehensive, insightful and in-depth assessment of the state of UK trade informed by expert testimony and evidence from frontline businesses gathered over the last two years.

It contains 114 recommendations <[link removed]> to remove barriers to trade and prepare the UK for the economic challenges and opportunities of the next decade including;

- A new UK Board of Trade ensuring the Government can no longer mark its own homework on trade.

- Align where it makes sense: Boost UK economic growth by maintaining regulatory alignment with the EU on manufactured goods, and on collaborative programmes such as Horizon and Erasmus.

- A visa system that works for Britain: Ease the labour shortages crippling UK businesses through reform of temporary and business visas, a new Youth Mobility Visa scheme with the EU and increased flexibility for artists and seasonal workers.

- Taking back control of trade: Subject all new trade agreements to full parliamentary scrutiny and approval of both Houses of Parliament.

If implemented, this policy platform can make a real difference for millions of people, start Britain back on the path to growth and allow us to repair relationships in Europe and our reputation around the world.

But we need your help to make decision-makers sit up and take notice.
