*What's New?*

Last week the Census Bureau released the 2020 Decennial Census Demographic and Housing Characteristics File (DHC). The DHC provides demographic and housing characteristics data for a range of geographies found in the United States and Puerto Rico, including age, sex, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household type, family type, relationship to householder, group quarters population, housing occupancy, and housing tenure. We added seven new video tutorials on our Resource pages to help you.

In May, we released new updates to improve your experience on data.census.gov [ [link removed] ]. With this release, you will now see

* Improved aesthetics of filter panel side panel and a new label for ?Search for filter.?
* New option that allows you to clear filters when running a new search in the single search bar.
* Improved application programming interface (API) functionality for time-series datasets that allow you to specify multiple time values in the same data request.
* Technical work to add time-outs to unusually large API data requests.
* Behind-the-scenes work to update suggested results in the typeahead search suggestions.
* Continued search engine optimization.
* Fixes to 20 defects.

The primary feature of the release is the new bar charts added to the Marital Status and Marital History section of the Geography Profiles. This update provides more meaningful information in the bar charts. You?ll also see the new buttons for ?Dataset? and ?Year? added to the table toolbar. These buttons provide an intuitive option for you to switch between all available datasets and years applicable to the table you are currently viewing. This will be more helpful for users to interact with the table and replaces the previous ?Survey? button. You?ll also see we removed the reset column buttons because the ?Restore? button at the top of the table already provides functionality to return to the default table view.

Finally, behind the scenes we performed technical updates to improve your view of the maps in the Geography Profiles on a mobile device without having the controls cover up the map automatically. Users will also experience a readjusted zoom area on the map as you make updates to your selected geographies.

Featured Question

*What is the difference between the universes for the American Community Survey, the Decennial Census, and the Current Population Survey?*

The universe for the American Community Survey (ACS) and the Decennial Censuses is the resident population. This universe includes all persons who are ?usually resident? in a specified geographic area. For the United States, the resident population includes all persons who usually reside in the 50 states and the District of Columbia but excludes residents of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Island areas under U.S. sovereignty or jurisdiction (principally American Samoa, Guam, United States Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands). In addition, the U.S. resident population excludes U.S. Armed Forces overseas and civilian U.S. citizens whose usual place of residence is outside the United States.

There are slight differences in the residence rules between the ACS and the Decennial Census. More information on this can be found in Chapter 9 of the ACS Handbook: What All Data Users Need to Know.

The universe for the Current Population Survey is the civilian non-institutionalized population. This universe includes everyone in the civilian non-institutionalized population living in the United States. Members of the Armed Forces living off post, or with their families on post, are included if at least one civilian adult lives in the household.
