District Work Week: Affordable Housing in NC-06

During May's district work week, Congresswoman Manning focused on the issue of affordable housing and met with organizations across the Sixth District that provide local families with affordable housing options and services.

High Point Salvation Army Center for Hope

Congresswoman Manning visited the High Point Salvation Army's Center for Hope Family Shelter to discuss the challenges they face in providing local families in need with nutritional support and housing.

SquareOne Family Justice Center
Congresswoman Manning visited the SquareOne Family Justice Center located in Reidsville.
SquareOne provides a variety of services for survivors of domestic violence, including emergency shelter, medical services, and counseling.

Greensboro Housing Authority 
The Greensboro Housing Authority provides affordable housing to over 12,000 Greensboro residents. The Housing Authority also provides programs that promote education, wellness, and youth achievement. 
Congresswoman Manning met with leaders of the Greensboro Housing Authority to discuss how she can best support their plans for providing quality, affordable housing for local families.
 
 


ImageReidsville Housing Authority

Congresswoman Manning visited an affordable housing site with the Reidsville Housing Authority.
The Reidsville Housing Authority provides public housing options for low-income families, elderly residents, and those with special needs in Reidsville and Rockingham County.

Community Housing Solutions 
Community Housing Solutions helps preserve safe and affordable housing options in Greensboro and Guilford County. Congresswoman Manning visited a home that was restored by Community Housing Solutions. 
"I was glad to visit Community Housing Solutions and see first-hand the impactful work they do making sure NC-06 residents can stay in their homes," said Congresswoman Manning. 

Federal Funding for High Point Housing Shelter & Day Center
In March 2022, Congresswoman Manning secured $3 million in federal funding for a shelter and day center in High Point.

Through a process called Community Project Funding, Congresswoman Manning secured federal funding for the City of High Point to create a shelter and day center that also provides community members with opportunities to access services, learn new skills, and regain their independence.

Congresswoman Manning secured $25 million for fifteen community projects across the Sixth District for fiscal year 2023. Read more about those projects here

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
Congresswoman Manning welcomed the Greensboro Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority to her local office to discuss their legislative priorities and provide them with an update on her work in Congress.

Caswell County Farm Visit 
Congresswoman Manning attended the Baldwin Family Farms’ Spring Farm Day in Caswell County to meet with local farmers and discuss their needs regarding the upcoming Farm Bill, a legislative package that supports America's farmers and agricultural industry.

Greensboro Bound Literary Festival 
At the Greensboro Bound Literary Festival, Congresswoman Manning dropped off books from the Library of Congress surplus book giveaway program for young readers in the Sixth District.  
Additionally, this month, Congresswoman Manning celebrated a federal grant for the Greensboro Bound Literary Festival from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Greensboro College President 
Dr. Czarda, President of Greensboro College, met with Congresswoman Manning at her local office to discuss her work on the Education and Workforce Committe in Congress and her support for local institutions of higher education.

Kernersville VFW Town Hall 
Congresswoman Manning attended the Kernersville VFW town hall to discuss the impacts of the PACT Act, legislation that expanded benefits to veterans who were exposed to toxins in the line of duty. 
The PACT Act also allows veterans and military families to seek justice through the legal system if they were exposed to contaminated water while serving at Camp Lejeune. 
Congresswoman Manning voted to pass the PACT Act in the 117th Congress and it was signed into law by President Biden in 2022.

Legislative Highlights

Manning Introduces Bipartisan Immigration Reform

Congresswoman Manning joined Representatives Maria Salazar (R-FL), Veronica Escobar (D-TX) in introducing the Dignity Act, a bipartisan immigration reform bill that will address America’s workforce needs, strengthen our economy, provide pathways to citizenship for DREAMers and asylum seekers, and secure the border.

Before introducing the Dignity Act, Congresswoman Manning voted against an extreme GOP immigration policy and called on her colleagues on both sides of the aisle to come together to pass serious immigration reform.

Standing up for Abortion Rights in North Carolina

Congresswoman Manning stood with House Democrats from North Carolina, including Representatives Deborah Ross, Valerie Foushee, and Alma Adams, to condemn the recently enacted 12-week abortion ban in North Carolina and fight to codify the right to abortion into federal law.

Manning Reintroduces Bipartisan Mental Health and Wellness in Schools Act 

During Mental Health Awareness Month, Congresswoman Manning and Congressman David Valadao (R-CA) introduced the bipartisan Improving Mental Health and Wellness in Schools Act, to integrate mental health promotion, education, and resources into existing school wellness policies.

On the House Floor, Congresswoman Manning recognized May as Mental Health Awareness Month and shared the urgent need for Congress to prioritize mental health in schools. Watch her remarks below.

Manning Hosts Roundtable with White House Officials

Congresswoman Manning and U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) led their colleagues in the House and Senate Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism in a meeting with Second Gentlemen Doug Emhoff, Domestic Policy Advisor Ambassador Susan Rice and Homeland Security Advisor Dr. Liz Sherwood-Randall to provide input on the Administration’s National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism.

Last December, Congresswoman Manning led 125 lawmakers in calling for interagency coordination to combat antisemitism. Following their call, President Biden established an interagency taskforce to lead an all-of-government approach to countering antisemitism. This month, the interagency taskforce published the first National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism.

UNCG Students Visit the Capitol

University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) students met with Congresswoman Manning as part of their Washington Summer Study Session, where they had the opportunity to ask the Congresswoman about important issues such as manufacturing, housing, and VA benefits.

High Point Furniture Manufacturers and Retailers
Congresswoman Manning provided the American Home Furnishing Alliance and the Home Furnishings Association, both based in High Point, with an update on her work to support workforce development initiatives and boost manufacturing in North Carolina's Sixth District.

North Carolina A&T State University Students 
North Carolina A&T State University students won the 2023 Agricultural Export Market Challenge, demonstrating their knowledge in scientific analysis and agricultural trade policy. Congresswoman Manning welcomed the winning students to her Washington office to recognize their achievement.

2023 Fair Housing Champion Award Winner
Congresswoman Manning met with Sofia Crisp, the National Association of Realtors 2023 Fair Housing Champion Award Winner. Through her organization in Greensboro, Sofia helps others prepare for homeownership with education and counseling programs. 


2023 Congressional Art Competition

This month, Congresswoman Manning announced the winners of the 2023 North Carolina’s Sixth Congressional District Art Competition during a congratulatory reception.
