URGENT: Congress must reject the backroom debt ceiling deal, which would force approval of a massive fracked gas pipeline. This would open the floodgates for even more drilling and fracking across vulnerable lands–unless you help us fight it.

PUSH BACK ON THE BAD DEBT DEAL
Supporter,
Fossil fuel companies have gone too far in Congress.
Their backroom wheeling and dealing would ram through approval of the fracked gas Mountain Valley Pipeline as part of the debt ceiling deal. No environmental analysis. No public input. And the deal attempts to lock the courthouse doors to pipeline opponents. Nothing would stand in its way. Even worse, the deal would undermine bedrock environmental laws, eroding our ability to fight back against ANY future pipelines.
This is unprecedented and unjust.
The fossil fuel industry is pushing a lie that we have to choose between paying our debts and protecting our environment. Any deal that weakens bedrock environmental protections and rubber stamps the fracked gas Mountain Valley Pipeline is a bad deal. This pipeline has already been delayed for years and run billions over-budget, partly because courts have overturned multiple permits because they don't account for environmental damage–especially pollution in local waterways.
We need your support to fight back against these dangerous provisions in the debt ceiling negotiations – and to continue all of our work to protect public lands, clean air and water, and fight the effects of climate change.

The deal–described as an “extraordinary end-run around the courts”--ignores the need for environmental analysis and public input, rubber-stamping approval of the pipeline within 21 days. And the precedent it sets would be catastrophic, drastically shortening the review time for the pet projects of any member of Congress in the fossil fuel industry's pocket–and the industry has very deep pockets.
Just this year, fossil fuel companies got their massive Willow drilling project in the Arctic approved. Then the federal government turned around and offered up a historic-sized chunk of the Gulf of Mexico to new oil leases. And now fossil fuel companies want to bypass basic environmental laws just so they can get their deadly, toxic fracked gas pipeline approved?
The fossil fuel industry's never-ending appetite for more drilling, pipelines, and profits will kill us all if we don't stop them.

Congressional Republicans have held America hostage for weeks while refusing to do the basic and fundamental work of paying our nation's bills. President Biden committed repeatedly to doing better. Clearly, only we can hold members of Congress accountable to their word and to their duties to us, the people, which is why we need your support right now to fund our critical policy and legislative work to stop these backroom deals once and for all.
Sincerely,
Mahyar Sorour
Director, Beyond Fossil Fuels Policy
P.S.-- The debt ceiling deal must pass without a giveaway to the fossil fuel industry.
