Dear John,
We have had an exciting and productive few weeks in Congress as I continue to represent YOU!
I introduced a bill that will provide equitable recovery for our community in times of disaster and a bill that funds important resources for our veterans. I also had the opportunity to meet with some LA-02 superstars in Washington, D.C., including our very own LSU Lady Tigers.
CARTER IN CONGRESS
Disaster Survivors Fairness Act
In LA-02 we know that natural disasters are a “when” not an “if.” As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, these disasters will become more frequent and intense. The recovery from these events is often inequitable. That’s why I’m proud to have co-authored the Disaster Survivors Fairness Act. This bipartisan legislation would ensure that recovery from these events is just and inclusive. Read more here.
WARTAC
Our veterans make incredible sacrifices for our country and in return we must be sure to support them here at home. I introduced the bipartisan Warrior Training Advancement Course (WARTAC) Act to do just that. This bill will raise awareness and bring improvements to the Warrior Training Advancement Course of the Veterans Benefit Administration which helps veterans re-enter the civilian workforce into meaningful roles. CARTER WITH THE COMMUNITY
Celebrating the LSU Lady Tigers
The LSU Women’s Basketball team made history this season by bringing home the university’s first NCAA championship and breaking the record for the highest-scoring women’s basketball game. I proudly hosted the Lady Tigers in our Nation’s Capital. They exemplified teamwork, drive, unity, and grace in the face of adversity. I am thrilled that they were exclusively recognized in Washington, D.C. and can’t wait to keep watching their rise to fame.
Celebrating Maliq Barnes
Maliq Barnes is a recent graduate from the International High School of New Orleans who broke the record for the largest amount of scholarship money offered by colleges and universities, garnering over $10 million. I was honored to have Maliq in Washington D.C. where I ensured that he toured the White House and Capitol building. Maliq will be attending Cornell University in the College of Engineering as a member of the class of 2027. Reach for the stars!
VA Curbside
Team Carter hosted a successful Veterans Curbside event in New Orleans. We had multiple partnering agencies and over 100+ attendees who received direct help with social security and VA privacy release forms. Be on the lookout for an additional Community Curbside event in the Baton Rouge area on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at the Charles R. Kelly Community Center!
Motor City Apartments Ribbon Cutting
Team Carter attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Motor City Apartments in Mid City Baton Rouge. This project was a collaborative effort between myself, local, and state leaders to bring an affordable and green housing development to the area. This is a wonderful addition to the community.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Commencement Addresses
I had the privilege of speaking to the 2023 graduates in LA-02 this month, including at my Alma Mater Xavier University. These students worked hard and never gave up to reach this milestone. Remember, no matter where you’re from, don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t do. You will face obstacles and struggles but don't quit!
Being the voice for the people of Louisiana's Second Congressional District is a privilege and I am honored to serve you. For the latest updates on my work, follow my social media accounts at the links below!
