Greener Pastures

What to Know: The number of Californians moving to Texas has increased by 36 percent. And many of them are bringing their companies with them.

The TPPF Take: It’s so profitable to relocate to Texas that at least one investor is offering to help companies move from California to the Lone Star State.

“John Ghiselli noticed that the trickle of businesses moving out of California 15 years ago had grown into a flood,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Businesses large and small, publicly traded and privately-owned, were calling it quits in the Golden State and starting anew elsewhere. This gave him an idea: What if capital for moving wasn’t an issue—how many more businesses might take the initiative to move out of state?”

Trafficking in Persons

What to Know: The Department of Homeland Security is making human trafficking a top priority at the southern U.S. border.

The TPPF Take: To address human trafficking, we must address the Rule of Law in migrants’ home countries.

“Transnational criminal organizations, including Mexican cartels and Central American gangs, have turned to human trafficking as a major source of income,” says TPPF’s Igor Magalhaes. “Corruption, impunity, and political suppression are also significant challenges that Mexico and the Northern Triangle countries face. The U.S. should support efforts to strengthen the rule of law in these regions.”

Psssst-Don’t Say Medicare-for-All

What to Know: One University of California political scientist is warning Democratic presidential candidates to ix-nay talk about single-payer ealthcare-hay.

The TPPF Take: The more that Americans know about Medicare-for-All, the less they like it.

“Medicare-for-All is not an expansion of Medicare but the creation of something altogether new,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “It would devour all other government-run health plans (Medicaid, the VA) and even largely outlaw private insurance—no wonder Americans aren’t interested in it.”
