Friends,

In nine months, we have the chance to defeat a president who, when faced with a national tragedy in Charlottesville, called Nazis “very fine people.”

Donald Trump is a president who threw paper towels at Puerto Ricans in the wake of the devastating Hurricane Maria while overseeing a criminally inept disaster relief effort. Thousands of Puerto Ricans died in the wake of that hurricane, and the Trump administration is still illegally withholding recovery funds more than two years later.

Donald Trump separated immigrant and refugee families and put kids in cages.

His petty acts of cruelty are unleashed against minority and immigrant communities daily, and it is clear his strategy for political success is to target the most vulnerable among us.

As the only immigrant in the Senate and a woman of color who Trump has repeatedly called “crazy,” I’m proud to support ASPIRE’s work in the fight to stop Trump and unseat his enablers in Washington by electing progressive people of color across the country.

Thanks to Democrats stepping up in 2018, we were able to elect the most progressive and diverse Congress in history. The House impeached Trump not just because he abused his power and obstructed Congress, but because we fought for and elected a House that looks more like America and is interested in holding him accountable. Unfortunately, people of color know how difficult it is to get a full and fair trial in this country. Instead of seeking one for President Trump, his enablers in the Senate rigged the trial to ensure his acquittal. If the Senate looked more like the House and better reflected the incredible diversity of the American experience, Trump’s trial likely would have ended quite differently.

The last three presidents all won second terms. Some organizations foresee Trump’s re-election as all but assured if the economy remains strong. We know Senate Republicans will work tirelessly to keep him in office. If we want to unseat this racist president, we must support progressive people of color.

But donations to ASPIRE have slowed, and if we fall short of our fundraising goal, we’ll have to scale back our efforts to elect progressive people of color while a racist president who attacks any woman of color with the temerity to stand up to him sits in the White House.

That’s why I’m writing personally today to ask for your help.

Together, we can beat Trump, hold onto the House, and take back the Senate from Mitch McConnell in November -- but we can’t do it without your help. So if you care about Congress looking more like America, if you want a Congress that’s not still full of wealthy, privileged people who can’t stop giving tax cuts to the one percent and big corporations at the expense of the most vulnerable, then please, make a donation to ASPIRE right now. >> [link removed]

Thank you for everything you do for the cause,
Mazie
