We’ve taken some licks from McCarthy’s hostage-taking exercise with the American economy, but we’ll never give up the fight.
John: A debt ceiling deal is looming in Congress, and a crucial vote is scheduled to take place on the House floor today. And McCarthy’s priorities of short-term gains over our planet's long-term health are written all over this deal.
Among the concerning elements in the proposed deal is the approval of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, a massive gas project spanning Virginia and West Virginia. This project not only threatens our communities and delicate ecosystems but also perpetuates our dependence on fossil fuels, hindering the transition to clean and sustainable energy sources.
Additionally, the proposed deal aims to speed up permitting processes through new deadlines for environmental analysis under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). While efficiency is important, we must thoroughly evaluate potential environmental impacts. Such shortcuts risk irreversible harm to our natural resources and undermine the integrity of our environmental safeguards.
The real impediment to deploying clean energy is not NEPA but rather an outdated transmission grid. But this bill only requires yet another study of what is needed for transmission. Rather than conducting duplicative studies, we need to be taking action to fix our grid now, with reforms like those that SEEC Clean Energy Deployment Co-Chairs Sean Casten and Mike Levin have proposed in their Clean Electricity & Transmission Acceleration Act.
It is infuriating to witness these climate setbacks within a crucial bill that should be focused on the health of our economy and the well-being of our citizens. This situation has been manufactured by Speaker McCarthy after holding our government and our climate progress hostage for MONTHS.
As we look towards the next legislative fights this Congress, SEEC PAC remains steadfast in our commitment to a clean energy future and avoiding a climate change calamity. We refuse to let setbacks deter us from our mission. We will continue to go to bat for policies that promote renewable energy, reduce carbon emissions, and protect our precious natural resources.
Thank you for your dedication, support, and unwavering belief in a sustainable future. We will keep fighting, no matter the obstacles, because our planet and its people deserve nothing less.
