Matt Trewhella
POLITICAL FOUNDATIONS OF THE WEST &
THE U.S. SUPREME COURT
Matt Trewhella has a spiritual rags to riches story. Today, he is nationally known for his efforts to restore governmental and ecclesiastical institutions to the foundations which made American great. Foundations uncovered when he discovered a book of historic magnitude in the Bavarian State Library.
Matt brought into the English language for the first time one of the most important political texts of 16th century. The Magdeburg Confession. Written in Latin, its writing became a defining moment in the development of Western Civilization in Europe.

Matt has spoken and written extensively on the ways in which the Magdeburg concepts enabled the Reformation to take hold in Europe. Its influence led eventually to the founding of the American Republic.

At our mid-week luncheon, he will speak of its importance today as the only available path to renewal for our American republic.
We will meet Noon to 1 PM this Wednesday

God's Purpose for Government
Designed that Mankind May Flourish
by Bob Linn
Abraham Lincoln once spoke of the notion that some are born with saddles on their backs and others booted and spurred to ride them. The concept is the fruit of secularism, statism, and radical individualism.

It is the foundation of all totalitarian regimes. After over 100 years of government schools, it is a notion which has become a part of much of the American political conscience. Socialism is what many Americans think will make them happy.
With the advent of Bernie Sanders, I am reminded of Angelo Codevilla’s statement that the politically strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.

Angelo Codevilla has served in the U.S. intelligence community, held a professorship at Boston University, and has written for the Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, and the New York Times to name only a few.

Last week, Dr. E. Calvin Beisner introduced us to more than the scientific falsehoods found in the framework of the Green movement.
He traced the line which connects the fake science of climate alarmism to the ultimate goal for a one world (totalitarian) government.
It is always best to get to the root of the issue. As theologian Robert Dabney stated, “He who prunes the offshoots of error has an endless task; a task which usually results only in surrounding himself with a thicket of thorny rubbish. It is better to strike at the main root of the evil stock from which this endless outgrowth sprouts.”

~Positivism in England, in Works, vol 3, edited by C.R. Vaughan, p 32.
As I have already suggested, America’s political and cultural problems began when we allowed the government to educate our children. The government over which we are to be watchmen and caretakers.

Governments at all levels in America are no longer supervised by an educated Christian citizenry. This presents a problem which is unsustainable. Left to their own devices, governments, like cancers, grow into grotesque, monstrous, and inhuman prison camps. Codevilla asks, “Do officials live in fear of overstepping their bounds, or do they swagger?”

De Tocqueville taught it is the Word of God which provides the foundation for the limited government Americans so prospered under.
Matt Trewhella is our speaker this week. He played a major role in uncovering the Magdeburg Confession. It is one of the most important documents in the development of Christian governmental systems. Systems which promote freedom through the concept of the rule of law.

Christian systems reign in the power of government. They have enabled mankind to prosper. To prosper through the ability to own private property from which people can not only grow food in abundance, but also to invent, manufacture, and create.

On this point, Codevilla points out that over-sized governmental power destroys the incentives of the economic actors. The greater the level of governmental intervention, the more difficult for the poor to rise out of poverty and to begin to flourish.
Matt Trewhella made a ground-breaking discovery when writing his book, The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrate. When he uncovered The Magdeburg Confession, he brought to light an important historic document which had been hidden from the English-speaking world for nearly 460 years.

The men of Magdeburg were the first in history to clearly articulate the responsibility of men to resist governmental tyrants. It was a document which would later influence John Knox and others who led the movement to reform the church and governmental institutions.

Matt needed a copy in English. He spent eight months making phone calls and sending emails to historians, scholars, professors, and librarians from the U.S. and Europe. They confirmed that no English translation existed.
To begin the translation project, Christian Himsel, librarian for Concordia University, sought for a copy of the confession in its original Latin text. He found a 1550 A.D. Latin original in the Bavarian State Library.
The translation was done by Dr. Matthew Colvin. Dr. Colvin was exceptionally well qualified, having earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Latin and Greek literature.

Thanks to Matt Trewhella, we now have in English another major piece of Christian political thought. Thought which helped build Western Civilization.

The idea that all men are subject to law is at the heart of the writers of the Magdeburg Confession. The responsibility of all men to uphold law and order makes the document unique.

For the men of Magdeburg, law-keeping responsibilities fell on the shoulders of "lesser magistrates" when "greater magistrates" failed and became tyrants. Ignorance of these ideas has diminished the strength of the American electorate. With that has come the demise of properly functioning governmental institutions in the United States.

This ignorance has been devastating on all levels - local, state, and national. A citizenry unfamiliar with Christian governmental principles has resulted in the decline of the rule of law in American culture.

An illiterate citizenry has lost an appreciation for the rule of law contained in the United States Constitution. Constitutions become trivial scraps of paper when people become ignorant of the foundations which support them.

Such is the case with the U.S. Constitution. We have slept while the Supreme Court has virtually re-written America's Constitution.
As the late Justice Anton Scalia said, “Day by day, case by case, [the Supreme Court] is busy designing a constitution for a country I no longer recognize.”

~Scalia, Romer V Evans

Dr. Beisner demonstrated why many of those in the political left blame the Cornwall Alliance for the fact that American's are quite skeptical about the concept that the industry of mankind will destroy the planet.

The Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation is a network of more than 70 evangelical Christian scholars. This group of scientists, economists, theologians, philosophers, and ethicists working together to promote educational goals.
Quoting Dr. Beisner:

Public policies to combat exaggerated risks can dangerously delay or reverse the economic development necessary to improve not only human life but also human stewardship of the environment.

The poor, who are most often citizens of developing nations, are often forced to suffer longer in poverty with its attendant high rates of malnutrition, disease, and mortality; as a consequence, they are often the most injured by such misguided, though well-intended, policies.

Capitalism (the free market) is the most ethical system available to mankind. It has a historical track record that trumps all other economic systems. Only capitalism can raise people out of poverty.

Capitalism makes efficient use of natural resources. Only capitalism protects and improves the natural environment.

Economic development, especially in poor countries, is one of the most important things we can pursue to protect our environment.

The "social justice" movement today is anything but Christian. Government forced wealth redistribution is contrary to Biblical law.

Biblical justice requires impartiality, proportionality, rendering what is due, and conformity with God's law.

When Christian leaders released (2018) The Statement on Social Justice and the Gospel, they completely twisted the Biblical message.

Our survival as a nation depends on getting this issue right.
