Dear Friend,
I now have an opponent. Republican Elmer Diaz, a realtor, has announced his candidacy for the 15th Senate District.
His declaration of candidacy is a part of Glenn Youngkin's strategy to flip the Virginia Senate to the GOP. If he succeeds, Youngkin will pursue his hard-right, extreme agenda to dismantle our public education system, strip reproductive rights from women, ban books, and harm our LGBTQIA youth. We've already seen such legislation during the first two years of his administration.
Our slim majority in the Senate has stopped these radical policies from reaching Youngkin's desk, where he was poised -- pen in hand -- to sign them into law.
If we lose that majority, Virginia loses. The country also loses. This year, Virginia is the only state holding elections for every seat in the state government, and Virginia's 2023 decisions literally set the stage for the nation's 2024 elections.
We have just a week left before our pre-primary filing deadline on June 8th to show a strong fundraising quarter and to let Diaz and his Republican handlers know that I am committed to standing up to them and their extremist agenda.

Will you chip in today to fund our people-powered movement ahead of our filing deadline next Thursday at midnight? Every dollar counts in critical moments like these, and your support is much appreciated. [[link removed]]
Sincerely,
Senator Ghazala Hashmi
