The 88th Regular Legislative Session has (and hopefully the 1st called special session will soon) come to a close. From January to May, legislators had 140 days to improve the lives of working Texans. Some understood the assignment and fought day and night for higher wages and better benefits, safer job sites and employee rights. We thank them for always giving workers a voice.

Unfortunately, the majority spent this time ignoring our greatest needs. The Legislature had an unprecedented $33 billion surplus to spend, and yet, the session ended with no pay raises for teachers and school staff, no long-term relief for retired state employees, no expanded access to healthcare or increased worker protections.

They failed Texas workers.

Despite this – our message is clear – a better Texas is possible. No matter where we come from, where we work, or what we’re fighting for, our ability to organize, mobilize and build power in our state has never been more important. If we are united in solidarity, if we know that our fights are inextricably bound, no one can stop us from building the Texas that working people deserve.

In solidarity,

Texas AFL-CIO
