JOHN,
This week, Congress must raise the country’s debt ceiling so the government can keep paying its bills and avoid economic catastrophe.
But MAGA Republicans—who voted 3 times to raise the debt ceiling with no issues under our last president—have held our country hostage with extreme demands that would hurt already-struggling families.
And we just found out that as part of the deal President Biden struck with Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to raise the debt ceiling, the bill will gut essential environmental laws that we’ve fought so hard to defend and it fast tracks the Mountain Valley Pipeline.
Yet again, we’re seeing this Dirty Deal—pushed by the fossil fuel industry to sell out vulnerable communities—attached to must-pass legislation. Alongside a strong grassroots movement, we helped defeat this Dirty Deal multiple times last year.
Together, we stopped this plan to gut essential environmental laws, fast-track polluting projects like pipelines, and silence marginalized communities already suffering from pollution and climate chaos. And now we've got to stop this Dirty Deal again before it becomes legislation.
Can you chip in today to support Rashida’s fight for people over polluters? Together, we can build a true democracy that centers everyday people rather than corporate profits.
Our government has enabled corporations to concentrate their industrial pollution in communities of color, treating our communities as disposable sacrifice zones.
Having grown up in the shadows of polluting industry in Detroit, Rashida knows what it’s like to live in a frontline community treated as a dumping ground.
Instead of taking away power from local communities to fight polluting projects, we need to make our democracy stronger.
That’s why Rashida introduced legislation to strengthen the environmental review process, addressing the environmental racism that treats communities as expendable.
As vice chair of the Subcommittee of Environment for the House Oversight & Reform Committee, Rashida has brought Congress to her district to hear directly from advocates living near toxic polluting projects, who suffer from high rates of asthma, cancer, respiratory diseases, infant mortality, and more.
In Congress, she’s been a bold leader for environmental justice, including fighting to end water shutoffs and leading the bipartisan Get the Lead Out Caucus to ensure that everyone has access to clean, safe, and lead-free water.
Please chip in $5 or more today to help fight for environmental justice and a true democracy that puts people over profits.
