The Livestrong Loop - May 2023

Woman exercising - National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

In honor of May's National Physical Fitness & Sports Month, here are 5 tips for survivors hoping to restart an exercise routine during or after treatment.

  1. Begin with small steps and build up to achievable goals.
  2.  Use Livestrong's Help Starts Here tool to search useful fitness resources tailored to cancer survivors, like this strength training guide from OncoLink.
  3. Invigorate body and mind. Take 5 deep breaths to relax your mind before jumping into your workout or incorporate meditation to bring a calming end to your routine.
  4. Get involved with Livestrong at the YMCA, a 12-week program dedicated to getting cancer survivors back on their feet. Find a location near you
  5. Don't compare your fitness journey to others'. Listen to your body's limits and find what works for you, not someone else!

100 MEANINGFUL MILES

MARVIN'S STORY

When a pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer diagnosis derailed his endurance running adventures, Marvin gave himself a challenge. "After chemo, I couldn’t get off the couch. I needed a goal to pull me out of that," he remembers. "A changed perspective can help to live with the disease. I thought, How can I balance my life so that it doesn’t take over?"

This summer, Marvin will take on the Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike ride through the Rockies with the Livestrong team. "If I can’t go fast, I can go long," he says. "I will give it everything I have to get there!"

THIS MONTH'S

HIGHLIGHTS

Livestrong cyclists at TD Five Boro Bike Tour

LIVESTRONG TAKES NYC

Livestrong cyclists rode 40 miles through the five boroughs of New York City in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour! Our team included two cancer survivors, Heather and Phil. Together, these riders fundraised nearly $18K to fund solutions to today's cancer problems. Interested in cycling, running, or walking with us? See our 2023 Event Lineup

THANK YOU, NURSES

In honor of National Nurses Week (May 6th-12th), the Livestrong team delivered gift baskets to nurses at cancer centers in our area, including the Livestrong Cancer Institutes of Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, to show our appreciation for all they do. But the appreciation doesn't have to stop after one week in May—thank a nurse today!
