For centuries, women have made significant contributions to the field of science. They’ve discovered life-saving remedies, devised world-altering inventions, and produced far-reaching research, but in many cases their invaluable advances are minimized or neglected.

On 11 February, the United Nations, partners worldwide, women and girls will mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Kiara Nirghin, 19, is a student, scientist, and advocate for women and girls in STEM. In 2016, she won the Google Science Fair for her work on a method to increase food security in drought-affected areas.

Christine Awori is Chief Executive Officer and Head of Legal Aid and Pro-bono Services for the Uganda Law Society (ULS), which established a satellite clinic in Amudat District in northeastern Uganda in 2019, with support from UN Women under the EU-UN Spotlight initiative. Going forward, the organization plans to continue its awareness raising, legal and referral services, and also secure partnerships with local radio stations for media campaigns.
