Dear Friend --
All eyes were on Hiroshima for the G7 Summit, and yet the leaders failed to come up with any serious contribution to building a world without nuclear weapons. ICAN, on the other hand, brought a dynamic group of young people, parliamentarians from G7 countries, and a powerful plan for the end of nuclear weapons.
ICAN’s denunciation of the G7’s failure of leadership and our plan to get to nuclear zero through the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons <[link removed]> was heard loud and clear.

During the course of the summit, ICAN’s message was picked up in hundreds of newspapers and broadcasts, potentially reaching 4.94 billion people. Overwhelmingly, these people heard that the TPNW was the answer to the problem of nuclear weapons.

While the G7 leaders failed to produce results, ICAN’s activities are already having an impact. For example, the G7 Parliamentarian Forum on the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons <[link removed]> helped set the stage for the Italian Chamber of Deputies to launch a cross-party group on Nuclear Disarmament <[link removed]> to politically advance the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Italy. And, 59 Members of Parliament from France <[link removed]> urged President Macron to start engaging with the TPNW by observing the upcoming meeting of states parties.
The next opportunity for the G7 to show that they are serious about addressing the nuclear threat is to participate in the next meeting of states parties <[link removed]> to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. That's where the responsible states meet to implement a plan for global disarmament.
Thank you for your support,
Alistair Burnett
