Hey folks, I just read something that stuck with me:
Of the 122 Mississippi House of Representatives seats that will be up for election this year, only 14 of them will have both a Democrat and Republican in the running.
That means over 80% of those seats will go uncontested.
Those stark numbers really emphasize why our work is so important here at Groundwork Project.
It isn’t good for democracy when voters don’t have a choice. But we also can’t ignore the fact that there are tons of unnecessary barriers that prevent people from running for office.
Thankfully, our grantees in Mississippi are working to empower communities that have been written off for decades and are using tried-and-true strategies to build grassroots power, register voters, promote civic engagement, and make change at the local level.
But the thing is, the continuation of all of this work depends on whether we meet our fundraising goals.
Without this grassroots team pitching in, we wouldn’t be able to provide grants and wrap-around support to our partners working in Mississippi and our other target states.
That’s why I’m hoping you can pitch in $10 or any amount today to help us meet our end-of-month fundraising goal before tomorrow night’s deadline. Any amount helps:
