The extremist playbook is clear: Silence lawmakers — and voters — they disagree with, however they can.
In Montana, the GOP barred their colleague, Rep. Zooey Zephyr — the first openly transgender woman elected to the legislature — from speaking on the floor for the last two weeks of session because she advocated against a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for minors.
In Oklahoma, GOP lawmakers formally censured Rep. Mauree Turner — the first openly nonbinary and Muslim person elected to the legislature — after state troopers claimed Turner blocked them from questioning a trans rights activist.
In Tennessee, the GOP state legislature voted to expel Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson — two Black members — for speaking out and protesting gun violence.
For a group that constantly touts their commitment to free speech, these GOP extremists are going to great lengths to formally silence democratically-elected officials — and the people who voted for them — when they simply don’t like what they have to say. It’s the antithesis of what our democracy stands for.

The GOP is using every tool at their disposal to maintain their stranglehold on positions of power.
Their attacks, which have disproportionately targeted Black and queer elected officials, represent a disturbing new frontier of their assault on our democracy. And it’s no coincidence that this is happening as voters continue to show up in record-breaking numbers, and as the electorate becomes more diverse.
The 2024 elections are around the corner, and GOP extremists are making every possible effort to maintain and gain control of any governing body they can, regardless of the will of the people.
When we see blatant efforts to block lawmakers’ and voters’ voices, we speak out. And as we inch closer to the 2024 elections, we’re committed to advocating against extremist attempts to silence our voices and subvert our will.
