While you likely hear more about our candidates running in high-profile statewide races, we are proud to endorse women running for school board and for city/town council seats. These are called “down ballot” positions and are elected through smaller, more local, races.

To us, it’s just as consequential and important as endorsing a candidate for Congress – in the end, getting more women in the rooms where decisions are being made will lead to the prioritization of women’s issues. (Not to mention, many of these races are more realistic and winnable for Democrats and women – especially in red states.)

These races don’t get enough attention, and these candidates don’t get nearly enough support. Many of the vital decisions that affect our everyday lives are made by representatives in our local and state governments. That is why we must build a pro-choice bench at EVERY LEVEL of government. Hitting our fundraising goals makes a huge difference and every dollar counts. After Roe v. Wade fell, abortion decisions were passed to the states. Now, having a pro-choice President isn’t enough to ensure access to safe abortions in our country – and millions of women and healthcare providers are living through dangerous times as a result. Building a pro-choice majority in state and local governments is the best way to ensure abortion access is reinstated and/or protected.

North Carolina is a perfect case study for the importance of this work at ALL levels of the ballot. While the Governor of North Carolina vowed to protect abortion access and vetoed an extreme abortion ban – it didn’t matter. There was a GOP supermajority in the legislature, and they overturned his veto. Now, women in North Carolina will have to travel out of state to obtain access to critical, often lifesaving healthcare. This is what happens when we neglect or ignore elections that are not high-profile or making national news.

While “down ballot” races don't get very much attention from other organizations or institutional endorsers, at Her Bold Move, we know they can make an enormous difference in their communities and beyond.
