Liz WillenDear reader,

In addition to covering the pending Supreme Court decision on the use of race in college admissions, The Hechinger Report is also examining pressing issues surrounding the separation of church and state, at a time when the court is friendly to school prayer. In a handful of states, including Kentucky, Montana and Texas, lawmakers have recently proposed or passed measures attempting to promote faith in schools. To tell this story, we take you deep inside a school prayer fight in Louisiana, where you will hear how passionately many parents, students and school officials feel on both sides of this issue.

Also, this week, in our continuing coverage of math, Proof Points columnist Jill Barshay digs on the so-called “science of math,” deconstructing the hotly contested teaching practice of speed drills. And we are still compiling answers to our math survey, so please fill it out.

Our coverage of the skepticism and new models surrounding higher education continues, with a look inside the new emphasis on certificate programs, and a heartfelt opinion piece on the power of an education to change lives for many generations. As always, we love to hear what you think! Let us know, and please urge others to sign up for our newsletters and become a member
