Friend — This month, we celebrate Black History Month and acknowledge the achievements, history, and struggles of Black people. It's important that we take this time to pay tribute to the trailblazing Black people who have shaped our collective society and culture.

One such person is Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm.

Her infamous catchphrase, unbought and unbossed, is exemplary of the legacy she has left behind. While walking the halls of Congress, I am continually reminded of the impact she had on my life and our country.

There are so many Black men and women who have blazed a trail so that young Black people could succeed: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Congressman John Lewis, Spike Lee, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Barack Obama, and Maya Angelou, just to name a few.

We are blessed with so many powerful and legendary figures in our collective history, and I can only hope that we live up to the legacies they have left behind for us.

Happy Black History Month,

— Yvette
