John,
Over the holiday weekend, President Joe Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy came to an agreement to raise the debt limit until 2025.
The agreement keeps the funding for the Social Security Administration (SSA), and many other vital government programs, largely flat for the next two years. That’s a cut in inflation adjusted terms—and certainly not the funding increase that SSA desperately needs.
The silver lining is that these cuts are far smaller than the massive 22% cut Republicans voted for last month. And the deal does not include a closed-door commission, or any other provisions that would directly cut Social Security’s earned benefits.
But with their vote last month, Republicans laid down a marker for what they will do if they keep control of the House, and gain control of the Senate and White House in 2024. To protect Social Security, we must make sure that doesn’t happen.
We’re fighting to take back the House, and protect the Senate and White House—by holding Republicans accountable for their vote to massively cut Social Security and other vital programs. Can you donate $5 today to support our efforts?
This deal should be entirely unnecessary, because the debt ceiling should not exist. There’s no need for Congress to vote again on spending that it already authorized—particularly now that Republicans are regularly holding the debt ceiling hostage to demand cuts to our earned benefits.
That’s why it’s essential that next time Democrats have control of Congress, they eliminate the debt ceiling forever.
We are going to spend the next two years working to throw Republicans out of office by telling everyone about their vote to gut the Social Security Administration and other vital benefits. Can you donate $5 today to hold Republicans accountable for their attacks on Social Security, and send them packing?
