I want to share this story with you, folks, about how I got my start in this work.
In 2009, I was appointed to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate for Colorado. Polls pegged my name recognition at a whopping 3%. Republicans called me the “accidental Senator.” Even a national political website greeted my new position with the headline: “WTF?!!.”
To say the least, I was not an obvious choice.
And it’s true, I had never run for office before. But during my time in education, I worked with incredible people from all over and saw America for what it was — its strengths, weaknesses, where we could do better, what our neighbors needed help with.
So I knew — with the right team — we could do some good in the Senate. And we've done exactly that. In 2021, we passed the expanded Child Tax Credit and cut child poverty nearly in half. Last year, we made the biggest investment in our infrastructure since the New Deal, passed gun control, and have been fighting ever since, to restore reproductive rights nationwide.
We’ve had some big wins, including my re-election campaign last fall. While we narrowly increased our Senate majority, we lost the House and now face a tough battle to hold the Senate in 2024. That’s why I’m back at work trying to elect and re-elect pro-choice leaders to hold our Senate majority and take back the House.
We cannot afford to lose the Senate majority, but we're falling behind on our fundraising goals this month and I'm concerned about what that means for our chances.
