John, As we near the halfway mark of 2023, we wanted to take a moment to look back at our accomplishments over the past few months, from our hard-won successes to our ongoing work. Free Speech For People is leading the fight to defend our democracy for we, the people, but we can’t do that without your help. Will you chip in what you can today to help Free Speech For People continue to protect and advocate for our democracy and our Constitution? Since January, we have made significant progress in our work to protect the right to vote: - In January, A federal judge in Colorado ruled that the leaders of the United States Election Integrity Plan (USEIP), an extremist organization with ties to QAnon and the January 6 insurrection, cannot escape a trial in our lawsuit seeking to stop their illegal voter intimidation campaign in Colorado and dismissed all counterclaims filed by USEIP. USEIP has been conducting a door-to-door campaign of intimidation at voters’ homes, in which its agents (sometimes armed) question voters about their method of voting, interrogate them about so-called fraudulent ballots, levy baseless accusations of fraud against voters, and take photographs of voters’ homes to store in a database. This case is now proceeding toward trial.
While we are excited about what we’ve accomplished to date this year, we still have work to do. - We’re continuing to call on election officials across the country to uphold Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment and bar insurrectionists, including former President Trump, from the ballot for their role in the violent January 6th attack on the Capitol.
- We have launched a new campaign calling for an impeachment investigation of Justice Clarence Thomas for using his position on the Court to advance his own personal interests and for abusing the power of his position on the Court, including accepting undisclosed luxury vacations and gifts from Republican billionaire Harlan Crow, and refusing to recuse himself from cases which present a clear conflict of interest.
- We have drafted and are now advancing a model federal bill, the Big Tech Accountability Act, designed to hold social media companies accountable when they engage in targeted amplification of disinformation and threats of violence on their platforms.
