Thank you for your action on assisted suicide

Dear supporter,

Across the British Isles, campaigners are seeking to allow people deemed to be terminally ill to get lethal drugs to end their lives. We wrote to you last December asking for help to respond to these threats. If you were one of the many who took action, thank you. Here’s what has happened since then:

Jersey

The Government of Jersey’s consultation on ‘assisted dying’ centred on how, not whether, the law should be changed. However, many of the nearly 1,400 responses argued firmly against the principle of assisted suicide. Karen Wilson, Minister for Health and Social Services, said the responses would be used as part of proposals she will put to the Jersey Government in June. These are expected to be finalised later this year, ahead of a debate in the States Assembly in spring 2024.

Isle of Man

More respondents to the Isle of Man’s ‘assisted dying’ consultation were opposed to the principle of assisted suicide than for it. Member of the House of Keys Dr Alex Allinson, who is driving the move to change the law, said the findings would “inform” the drafting of legislation.

Westminster

The House of Commons Health Committee was reportedly ‘overwhelmed’ by the number of responses to its call for evidence. The committee’s inquiry into assisted suicide is ongoing. MPs are currently hearing evidence on issues including access to palliative care and the role of medics.

It is clear from the feedback from these consultations that Christians responding in large numbers has been noted.

In Scotland, Liam McArthur MSP’s proposal to legalise assisted suicide has been delayed, as legal advice is being sought over concerns about legislative competence. The Bill is expected to be brought forward later this year.

Please pray:

  • Giving thanks for the many good responses to the recent consultations;
  • That politicians would listen to the concerns that have been raised;
  • For the protection of the vulnerable from assisted suicide laws.

Yours in Christ,
