You don’t stop being a citizen just because you’re in prison. But when it comes to voting rights, there are laws on the books that consistently sideline those impacted by our nation’s criminal-legal system. Depending on where they live, folks are stripped of their right to vote before, during, and after their imprisonment, despite the fact that policies passed on the outside continue to impact them, their friends, and their family. This is cruel, and it has no place in a truly representative democracy. But there are some states that are fighting back. In legislatures across the country, new bills are being introduced and passed that’ll ensure incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people can advocate for themselves and their loved ones. Thanks for all that you do. Sami and Chloe |
