Countless Americans of every color and creed have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.

Today, I hope you will join me in honoring their sacrifice, their dedication, and their love for our country.

Each sacrifice leaves behind a family, friends, and a community with a permanent void. I am keeping all of them close to my heart.

We drink from wells of freedom and liberty that we did not dig. There is no commensurate repayment for those who gave their lives to defend our country, so instead we must take their sacrifice to heart and pay it forward to make this a country that they would be proud to defend.

Patriotism is a love of country — and that love manifests itself in service. In sacrifice. An ultimate act of love for your country, and your fellow countrymen and countrywomen.

May we prove worthy of that in our continued service to this great nation.
