Hi there, I'm Ruwa!

I’m the first Muslim woman elected to the Georgia State House of Representatives, and the first Palestinian-American elected to any office in Georgia.

It’s not lost on me that folks like me haven’t historically had a seat at the table in this state. I wholeheartedly believe that diversity in government isn’t just a box to check — it leads to better laws, more inclusive leadership, and more welcoming policies for all Georgians. In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, I want to talk to you about why Fair Fight’s mission of protecting the freedom to vote and electing diverse pro-democracy champions is so important to our community here in Georgia.

When you think of Fair Fight, their work to stop Republican voter suppression is probably what comes to mind first. But their efforts go far beyond that. In the last election cycle, Fair Fight endorsed a slate of pro-voter candidates like me: including 9 AAPI candidates, 20 first-time candidates, 47 women, and 56 people of color. And it doesn’t stop there — they persuaded voters to support us, donated to our campaigns, amplified our campaigns through ads and social media, strategized to increase voter engagement, and offered training sessions on messaging, voter contact, and grassroots organizing. They’ve helped make running for office less intimidating and more accessible so that a first-time Palestinian-American candidate like me could make history.

It may seem like the last election cycle just ended, but the truth is, Fair Fight is preparing for the 2024 election now. And they need the full strength of this movement alongside us. People constantly ask me what role my faith plays in my life and how it influences me, especially as the first Muslim woman in the Georgia State House. A core tenant of Islam is justice, and that’s what inspires me to continue caring for my neighbors and protecting the marginalized.

I’ve felt the impact of the lack of Muslim and Palestinian visibility from a young age, like when my classmates would call my family’s home a “bomb lab” as the bus dropped me off after school, when a teacher pulled me out of class to ask if my family had ties to militant groups, and the countless times I’ve been “randomly selected” by TSA. Even as I ran for office last year, my opponent used anti-Muslim lies to disparage my record and claim that I had ties to terrorism. It was the same type of bullying I experienced as a young girl, but this time, I wasn’t alone — so many people in my district reached out to me and said “This is unacceptable. How can we help? How can we support you?” There are so many times I could have let the discouragement wear me down, but I’m so grateful that I stayed in the fight.

Everything I’ve done has felt like uncharted territory for somebody like me, but Fair Fight helped me blaze my own trail — and I know they’ll continue to help other candidates do the same.
