Freedom is not free. We owe a deep debt of gratitude to our fallen servicemembers and their families that can never be repaid. Andrew urges all to always remember and honor those who gave everything to ensure our way of life and to never take the liberties they fought and died to protect for granted. ANDREW IN THE NEWS Republican-led legislation would bar using schools as shelters to combat NYC’s migrant crisis " A pair of Republican pols introduced legislation in response to Mayor Eric Adams’ migrant relocation efforts that would bar housing migrants in public schools and would require the federal government to publicly report where these individuals are resettled…Long Island Rep. Andrew Garbarino is sponsoring [legislation] that would require the federal government to consult with governors and mayors handling an influx of migrants before funding any resettlement efforts within their jurisdictions. It would also require the Secretaries of Health and Human Services and Homeland Security to issue monthly reports to the Congress regarding any migrant transportation and relocation efforts. The move comes after City Hall sparked outrage earlier this month when Rockland and Orange County found out Adams planned to send busloads of migrants to hotels in their upstate communities, after apparently running out of temporary shelter spaces within the five boroughs…'Tens of thousands of migrants have poured into New York as a direct result of the border crisis. Migrants have been dropped off at New York airports in the dead of night and bused up to New York City creating a tremendous stain on local resources, all without warning,' said Garbarino. 'To this day, the federal government has provided little to no information about the migrants they have relocated here or how they have been vetted.' " Read the full article here. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS Andrew Introduces Bill To Require The Federal Government Notify Local Officials Before Relocating Migrants To New York and Other States This week, Andrew introduced The Migrant Relocation Transparency Act which would institute reporting requirements around the federal resettlement, transportation, or relocation of undocumented migrants. In a statement announcing the bill Andrew said in part, "My constituents have a right to know who is coming into their community and local municipalities have a right to be given fair warning about the number, vetting status, and resources being allocated to any migrants being relocated to their jurisdiction. This bill would require transparency and accountability for the federal relocation of migrants, improve public safety, and prevent the administration from continuing to hide their role in these relocations behind cloak and dagger tactics." Grace Meng Brian Fitzpatrick and Abigail Spanberger to introduce the bipartisan Hot Foods Act. “Right now, a working mom struggling to feed her family is permitted to purchase a cold sandwich for her kids using SNAP benefits but prohibited from buying soup or a rotisserie chicken to ensure they get a hot meal,” Andrew said. “It makes little sense to continue to impose an arbitrary and outdated restriction on the use of SNAP benefits to purchase hot foods when the ability to do so could make a significant difference to so many families. I am proud to co-lead the Hot Foods Act to implement common sense reforms to the SNAP Program that will ensure Long Island children are able to receive healthy, hot meals using these benefits.” Andrew Fights Fentanyl Crisis This week, Andrew voted for H.R. 467, the Halt All Lethal Trafficking of (HALT) Fentanyl Act, which makes the temporary class-wide scheduling order for fentanyl-related substances permanent, placing fentanyl-related substances as a Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. Andrew also helped introduce the Stop The Scourge Act. In a statement he about the bill he said, "Fentanyl poses an imminent threat to the health and safety of Long Islanders. This legislation will not only make clear the dangers of fentanyl, but also require the Administration to conduct an assessment of all current tools and capabilities that can be used to address this crisis.” Andrew is committed to fighting the fentanyl crisis which has devastated so many families on Long Island and around the country.
