President Joe Biden falsely claimed that the Limit, Save, Grow Act, which raises the debt ceiling responsibly while also growing the economy and saving American taxpayers money, will cut veterans benefits.
This is false. The Washington Post even acknowledged that “the White House acts as if the numbers it conjured up are real,” when in fact the bill never mentions veterans.
There are no cuts to the Veterans Administration or veterans benefits in this bill, which simply caps government funding at December 2022 levels; the same numbers we were operating under when the Biden administration called veterans’ health care “world-class.”
Republicans have always put veterans first in our budget proposals and will continue to do so throughout the 118th Congress. Already, we’ve passed four bills that will improve veterans benefits. We’re also fighting for responsible cuts to wasteful spending as part of the debt limit negotiations, because if our federal debt continues to climb, soon we will not be able to provide any of the benefits our veterans are entitled to.
I’m also a proud co-sponsor of the Major Richard Star Act, which grants disability benefits to all combat-disabled uniformed services retirees, no matter their years of service. I hope to see that bill, and the many other pieces of legislation that similarly improve veterans benefits and outcomes, pass the House this Congress and be signed into law.
Freedom isn’t free, but talk is cheap, and it’s time for Biden to start working with Republicans to improve veteran’s lives.
