Red Flag Warning & Air Quality Alert Today

Red Flag Warning Issued from noon until 9 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for several counties in northern and central, Minnesota effective Sunday, May 28 at noon until 9 p.m., due to extreme fire risk conditions.

Affected counties include Becker, Beltrami, Big Stone, Cass, Chippewa, Clay, Clearwater, Cook, Crow Wing, Douglas, Grant, Hubbard, Itasca, Kittson, Koochiching, Lac Qui Parle, Lake, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Otter Tail, Pennington, Polk, Pope, Red Lake, Roseau, St Louis County, Stevens, Swift, Todd, Traverse, Wadena, Wilkin, and Yellow Medicine.

A Red Flag Warning means fires can spread quickly and easily progress out of control under the current weather conditions, including low humidity, high winds, and warm temperatures. Residents should not burn in those counties where a Red Flag Warning is in effect and should check any recent burning they may have done to ensure the fire is completely out.

Air Quality Alert Issued until Monday at 8 p.m.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an air quality alert for north central, central, and southeast Minnesota from noon on Sunday, May 28, through Monday, May 29, at 8 p.m. due to ozone pollution.

Counties affected include Aitkin, Anoka, Benton, Blue Earth, Brown, Carver, Cass, Chisago, Crow Wing, Dakota, Dodge, Faribault, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Hennepin, Houston, Isanti, Kanabec, Le Sueur, Martin, McLeod, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Mower, Nicollet, Olmstead, Pine, Ramsey, Rice, Scott, Sherburne, Sibley, Stearns, Steele, Wabasha, Waseca, Washington, Watonwan, Winona, and Wright.

To reduce additional air pollutants, open burning is not allowed, and campfires are discouraged. Additional counties have burnings restrictions in place due to high fire danger levels. The DNR will not issue or activate open burning permits during the Red Flag Warnings or Air Quality Alerts, and campfires are discouraged.
