Hi John, Last month, we asked you to choose the statement that resonated most with you for our global economic reform campaign. The most popular one-liners with 40% of the votes each were: ‘We believe in economic justice, we shouldn't leave anyone behind’ and ‘We need the World Bank and other global banks to work for people and the planet.’ Here’s what some of you said: "A lot of people die every day as a result of hardship. We need to reach out to them, show them love. No one should be left behind." - Lisa, Nigeria "The future belongs to our kids. We need the G20 nations to use all their tools to fund a sustainable future and a safe planet for future generations and create a long lasting environment for everyone to live in." - Samantha, South Africa "A tiny group of people around the world own most of the world's wealth. They have to start sharing their wealth with everyone else and stop being greedy, just wishing for more profits, and instead make this world fair for every living human and species!" - Mary, US Wealthy nations are the major contributors to climate change but don’t assume responsibility for the destruction to the environment and health of nations who are affected most significantly. It is past time for G20 countries to be held accountable! - Susan, Canada Thank you for your useful feedback! We’ll use this to help shape our campaign and will be in touch with more ways you can use your voice soon. |

People changing the World: Isaac BezabihCan you tell us a little bit about yourself? I’m Isaac Bezabih and I live in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I’m in my late twenties. What is the focus area of your activism work? My activism work focuses on a number of social issues and problems in Africa and globally. These include job creation for youth, and tackling issues like extreme poverty and the impact of climate change. I am actively involved in promoting digital skills for young people in Africa. What inspired you to become an activist? Several things inspired me to become an activist. I had a real desire for change and I wanted to fight for a better future for my community and globally. I wanted to amplify the voices of marginalized groups to raise awareness about their struggles. I saw a need to advocate for human rights and to fight discrimination to ensure a more inclusive and equal society. I also feel driven to protect the planet and raise awareness about environmental issues and the impact of climate change, and to push for more sustainable policies and practices. Activism gives me a sense of purpose. I feel empowered to share my ideas and contribute to a cause I believe in. I also find solidarity and strength in collaboration and networking. Seeing other young people passionate about similar issues inspires me. What is your most memorable moment as an activist? Learning about ONE and visiting the Kenyan Parliament in Nairobi was truly memorable. Attending a Youth Connekt event in Kigali also had a significant impact on my journey as a ONE Champion and activist. Which activist has most inspired you? Aya Chebbi is the most inspiring activist for me. Her dedication and work as the former African Union Special Youth Envoy have had a profound impact on me. What's one thing you've learned that might help someone new to activism? Start small and focus on one specific issue or cause you’re passionate about. This helps to dedicate your time, energy, and resources more effectively. I’d also recommend educating yourself about the issues you’re working on. Research the root causes, the current challenges, and potential solutions. This will help you stay informed and you’ll be able to communicate your message in a more effective and meaningful way. Joining forces with like-minded people and organisations is also crucial. Activism is often more powerful and impactful when you do it together. Join local or online communities, attend events, or network with others who share your passion. Remember that change takes time and persistence. Activism can be challenging and progress may not happen overnight. Stay committed, and be resilient and adaptable when faced with obstacles. Celebrate small victories and focus on your long-term goals. Want to hear more from Isaac? Watch his video with tips on how to become an activist! |
