Jack, like most media outlets, Daily Kos used to rely exclusively on ad revenue to cover our costs. That stopped being the case more than a decade ago, as ad revenue plummeted, and Daily Kos evolved.

The biggest source of Daily Kos income is small donations from readers and activists like you. We don't have a billionaire backer like so many news outlets these days, or big corporate sponsors. Truthfully, we like it that way because it makes us accountable to you, and not some shady rich dude with his own agenda.

We need to raise $36,423 before the end of the month to close the books on May. That could be tough because Memorial Day weekend is one of the quietest periods of the year of us. So I have a hugely important thing to ask: Can you donate $5 right now to help us make our monthly goal?
