Dear Friend,

As you may know, the U.S. will soon hit the debt ceiling, an arbitrary limit on the amount of bonds the U.S. can issue to pay the nation’s bills. In order to avoid our nation defaulting on its debt, an unprecedented act that would lead to financial catastrophe, Congress must act to raise the debt ceiling. 

However, in recent months, House Republicans have been holding our economy hostage – refusing to raise the debt ceiling unless we slash programs for low-income and middle-class families. I've long fought to repeal the debt limit to end this kind of toxic brinkmanship, given it has no impact on government spending and threatens the economic security of millions of Americans.

On the House floor this week, I made it clear: Only considering cuts to the middle class instead of the billionaires who fund their political campaigns isn't negotiation – it's hypocrisy.
